Webinar: Tobacco Control Policy 101
Understanding the Legislative Process
When discussing the legislative process, many people think only about how to enact policies and laws at the federal and state level. But, how familiar are individuals, groups and organizations with what happens on city councils and with county supervisors when proposing and crafting policy? Much of the innovative public health policy is created at the local level, and having a better understanding of the local law making process is important to improve public health in all areas - nutrition, tobacco control, physical activity or chronic disease more generally.
This webinar reviews the distinction between a policy and an ordinance, the source of legal authority, the components of an ordinance, and key players in the process, and includes interview discussions with experts representing community and county stakeholders.
Webinar expert speakers include:
- Ian McLaughlin, Senior Staff Attorney at PHLP’s Technical Assistance Legal Center
- Matthew Moore, Staff Attorney at PHLP’s Technical Assistance Legal Center
- Kristine Glaze, Outreach Coordinator at Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA)
- Denice Dennis, Tobacco Prevention Project Manager, Contra Costa Health Services
You can also learn about the highly accessible workshops and trainings we offer—they're designed to empower communities to move forward with concrete policies and strategies that will create real and lasting change. If you have any questions about the webinar content, please contact us.
This webinar is supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
