On August 10, three San Francisco supervisors introduced a proposed law aimed at encouraging fast food restaurants to provide healthier food and beverages for children. The law would only allow restaurants to give away kids’ toys or other incentives with meals that include fruits and vegetables and that don’t contain too many calories, too much fat, or too much salt.

OAKLAND, CA—The Public Health Institute (PHI) and Public Health Law & Policy (PHLP) announce today that PHLP has officially launched as an independent not-for-profit organization.

“From its inception at PHI, PHLP has been on the cutting edge of public health by providing high-quality technical legal assistance and policy analysis to public health advocates, public health professionals, and governmental entities,” according to PHI President & CEO Mary A. Pittman, DrPH.

Mounting evidence points to a link between rising obesity rates and the growing consumption of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages. Two new tools from PHLP detail how and why imposing a fee on the beverage industry could help state and local governments curb rising obesity rates and fund public health programs.

Concerns about buying food from afar are prompting some states and cities to consider laws promoting the purchase of locally grown food. An article coauthored by PHLP staff, published in the inaugural issue of the Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development (JAFSCD): Laws to Require Purchase of Locally Grown Food and Constitutional Limits on State and Local Government: Suggestions for Policymakers and Advocates, offers guidelines for drafting policies that favor locally grown food without violating constitutional restrictions on state and local laws that discriminate against products derived out-of-state. The inaugural issue of JAFSCD is FREE to non-subscribers through October 1.
