With a multi-disciplinary team of lawyers, environmental policy experts, land use planners, economic development specialists, and communications professionals, PHLP develops and provide the tools and training communities need to change the conditions and social norms that affect people’s behavior and health. Since 1998, PHLP has collaborated with local communities to identify policies and laws that will improve the health of their most vulnerable populations.
PHLP’s work has led to dramatic changes in communities. For example, our model tobacco control laws have helped change the public acceptance of smoking in California. Our trainings and toolkits showed community planning and health departments how to collaborate on their interrelated work, leading to widespread participation of public health constituents in land use planning processes. PHLP currently brings its interdisciplinary approach to the challenges of childhood obesity prevention, tobacco control, global climate change, and altering the built environment to improve health.
