Leon Andrews is the program director at the National League of Cities’ Institute for Youth, Education, and Families. Prior to joining the NLC he was a fellow at the Forum for Youth Investment, where he coordinated a multistate youth policy and engagement initiative. He also serves on the boards of the National Recreation and Parks Association, the Youth Planners Network, Healthy Kids Healthy Schools, and the Safe Routes to School National Review Group. He is currently a PhD candidate at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and holds a master’s in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon University.
Bechara Choucair, MD
Bechara Choucair is the commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health. Prior to his appointment, he served as executive and medical director at the Heartland International Health Center, and as an adjunct professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He continues to serve as the vice chair of community medicine and as a faculty advisor at Feinberg. He holds a master’s in health care management from the University of Texas and an MD from the American University of Beirut.
Phil Ferrante-Roseberry
Phil Ferrante-Roseberry is the executive vice president of special projects at TechSoup Global, an organization that helps nonprofits obtain and use technology to heighten their impact. He served as the executive director of TechSoup Global for eight years, and has extensive experience with collaborations between corporations and non-profit organizations. Prior to joining TechSoup he worked as a software engineer on a wide range of projects including weather radar systems, mainframe computers, and customer relationship management systems. He holds a BS in Computer Engineering from the University of Massachusetts.
Mark Finucane
Mark Finucane is a managing director with Alvarez & Marsal Healthcare Industry Group in Los Angeles. Prior to joining A&M, he spent seven years as a national account leader and co-director of the Academic Medical Center Group at Ernst & Young. He has also served as the CEO of the Los Angeles County Healthcare System, has held various positions in the San Francisco Department of Health, and was the Director of Health for Contra Costa County, California. He earned a BA from Wichita State University. He also studied at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and attended a variety of senior executive development programs at Harvard University, IBM, the Transamerica Corporation and others throughout his career.
Richard J. Jackson, MD, MPH
Richard J. Jackson is professor and chair of environmental health sciences at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Public Health. He is a pediatrician and public health leader who served as the state public health officer and chief deputy director at the California Department of Health Services (CDPH), and the director of the National Center for Environmental Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2005 he was recognized with the highest civilian award for U.S. Government service, the Presidential Distinguished Executive Award. He holds a BA from St. Peter’s College in New Jersey, an MMS from Rutgers State University of New Jersey, an MD from University of California, San Francisco; and an MPH from the University of California, Berkeley.
Barbara Masters
Barbara Masters is an independent consultant with more than 25 years of experience in health policy, working in philanthropy and local government as well as on Capitol Hill. During her tenure at The California Endowment, she led efforts to develop advocacy training and capacity-building programs, and effective methods to evaluate policy change activities. She served as vice president of the California Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (CAPH), and directed intergovernmental relations for the Los Angeles County Department of Health. She began her career in health policy as a legislative assistant for Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA). She holds a BA with honors from the University of California, Berkeley; an MA in biology from the University of Colorado, Boulder; and graduate certification from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
William M. Sage, MD
William M. Sage is vice provost for health affairs and James R. Dougherty Chair for Faculty Excellence at University of Texas at Austin. Before joining the UT faculty in 2006, he was a professor of law at Columbia University, and has had visiting appointments at Harvard and Duke. He has published more than 100 articles in publications including the Journal of the American Medical Association, Health Affairs, the Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law, and the law reviews of Columbia, Duke, Georgetown, Texas, and Vanderbilt. He serves on the Fellows Council of the Hastings Center on bioethics, and is a member of the editorial board of Health Affairs. He holds an AB magna cum laude in biochemical sciences from Harvard College, a JD with distinction from Stanford University, and an MD with research honors from Stanford University.
Stephen D. Sugarman
Stephen D. Sugarman, JD, is a Roger J. Traynor Professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), where he has also served as associate dean. He has been a visiting professor at the London School of Economics; University College, London; the University of Paris; the European University Institute, Florence; Kobe University Faculty of Law; Kyoto University Faculty of Law; and Columbia University School of Law. He has also served as acting director of the New York State Commission on the Cost, Quality, and Financing of Education. He holds a BS with highest distinction in business administration from Northwest University, and a JD summa cum laude from Northwestern University School of Law.
Adewale Troutman, MD
Adewale Troutman is the director of public health leadership and practice at the University of South Florida, and currently teaches at the University of Louisville School f Public Health and the Morehouse School of Medicine. He has more than 40 years experience in public health practice, policy development, and direct patient care. Prior to joining the staff at USF, he served as director of the Department of Public Health and Wellness in Louisville, Kentucky. He also holds leadership roles on many national advisory boards and committees, including the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the health equity and social justice committee of the National Association of City and County Health Officers (NACCHO). He holds an MD from New Jersey Medical School, an MPH from Columbia University, and a master’s in black studies from the State University of New York at Albany.
Edward F. West
Edward F. West is a cofounder and managing director of Sage Partners LLC, where he works with founders of new ventures to lead, structure, finance, and launch businesses in the global software, internet services, and information services industries. He served in the public sector as a congressional intern for U.S. Senator H. John Heinz III, working in areas of energy, environments, business, trade, and tax policy; and as a transportation and urban planner at the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission in Philadelphia. He holds an AB from Princeton University and an MBA in general management from the Harvard Business School.
Lynne Withey, PhD
Lynne Withey was the director of the University of California Press, where she played a major role in shaping editorial programs as well as launching UC Press’ electronic publishing program. She has also taught at UC Berkeley, the University of Iowa, and Boston University, and is the author of four books. Prior to joining UC Press, she worked in the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs in the University of California's statewide administration. She has also served as president of the Association of American University Presses. A historian and author, she holds an AB from Smith College and a PhD from UC Berkeley.
