PHLP’s Robert Ogilvie Joins Clinton, Schwarzenegger to Discuss Health, Nutrition, and Obesity

PHLP’s Robert Ogilvie joined President Bill Clinton and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as a featured speaker at the Governor’s 2010 obesity summit in Los Angeles on February 24.

The invitation-only summit brought together leaders from business, education, government, and public health to discuss the best policies and practices to combat the state’s obesity crisis. Dr. Ogilvie, who directs PHLP’s Planning for Healthy Places program, was one of three speakers invited to present to President Clinton and the governor.

Dr. Ogilvie spoke about local efforts that reflect the governor’s “Health in All Policies” approach to combat obesity and improve health in California, urging that government staff at all agencies work with community leaders to ensure that health is considered when policies are developed. He presented examples of effective collaborations such as public health staff and advocates getting involved in redevelopment efforts and city planning, and school districts working with local government on “joint use” agreements to open school grounds for community use after school hours.
